Minnesota orgs step up support for trans youth amid federal pushback

It s a scary time to be trans or non-binary especially as a youth And it s a scary time to be a supportive caregiver or parent Hannah Edwards executive director of Transforming Families puts it succinctly Hannah Edwards executive director of Transforming Families Edwards daughter used to give interviews about her experiences as a trans teen Now however she is only allowed to participate in interviews anonymously for her own safety Edwards and her daughter have been involved with Transforming Families a Minnesota organization that supports transgender gender non-conforming and questioning youth and their families since her daughter was four years old At Transforming Families their family was able to make connections with other families with trans children building a organization of mutual promotion Ten years later Edwards daughter is her mother says happy healthy and thriving Unfortunately not every trans and or nonbinary child has the same supportive affirming experience In the Trevor Project s survey the organization located that of LGBTQ young people had seriously considered attempting suicide For transgender and nonbinary young people that percentage also added other events open to registration including Zoom meetings about moving to Minnesota something that families of trans youth in other parts of the nation may be considering When you look at the other trans refuge states Minnesota is at the top of that list because we have leaders at the forefront who are unapologetically defending the trans refugee people like Atty Gen Keith Ellison Gov Tim Waltz and Lt Gov Peggy Flanagan who see the intrinsic value in loving and supporting our trans youth and who aren t willing to throw our kiddos or our families under the bus for political gain anxieties and fears their clients as well as their providers a great number of of whom are also members of the LGBTQ group are experiencing The tone of therapy has shifted Fouts disclosed Our clients are experiencing a lot more anxiety and fear and worry about a lot of what ifs what could happen if certain laws are put into place et cetera Our therapists are just trying to really be in tune with their clients about where they re at RECLAIM Fouts noted is the only nonprofit organization in the state focused on addressing the mental medical requirements of the LGBTQ locality Other clinics in and around the Twin Cities are private clinics while in rural areas we just don t have enough trans-affirming services or providers available Kat Rohn executive director of OutFront Minnesota OutFront Minnesota a prominent advocacy organization for the rights and wellbeing of LGBTQ Minnesotans has taken specific policies in response to what Executive Director Kat Rohn describes as a concerning and escalating circumstances It has expanded its pool guides and group briefings to keep society members across the state informed about local protections in Minnesota as well as combat misinformation Early on in this administration we saw a lot of swirling rumors that folks with X gender markers on either their state or federal IDs would be denied TSA measure or unable to go through territory line crossings We were able to help dispel chosen of those rumors Rohn explained What allies can do When requested what Minnesotans can do advocates encouraged allies to make their voices heard This is a really vital area for folks to engage their legislators and talk to them about what they value and affirm that aid for funding for HIV prevention services or Inclusive Healthcare mental and physical programs is something that is a shared value Rohn revealed We ve already seen approaches in which advocacy across party lines for things like Medicare and Medicaid have helped to shift chosen of these conversations And I think it s essential to recognize that those conversations and that advocacy does not go unheard even in a complex federal lens Claire Tralle board chair at Transforming Families youth Minnesotans should avoid complacency We don t just live in this blue Minnesota bubble especially people in the Twin Cities which is different from living in rural Aitkin County Tralle noted Allies she added need to also be prepared to act at the society level We really need the cisgender allies to stop just silently permitting anti-trans or transphobic actions to happen All it takes is This can be especially critical for Black and brown trans people Coleman emphasized We need all hands on deck because they are screening us out of a lot of rooms Coleman disclosed Black and brown LGBTQ folks are being removed from these spaces So if you are there now you really have to be an ally You have to stand in the gap You have to make sure that the requirements that were articulated in district meetings or town hall meetings or speaking with clients are articulated to the folks that are ultimately making the decision For Coleman history has also provided blueprints for getting through tough times provided allies and society members are able to work together Civil rights was a movement women s rights was a movement gay rights a movement We understood that there was this approach that we needed to take involving your local elected agents It was getting in the street and really bringing your issues home with folks It was about being current and being seen Coleman disclosed Civil rights women s rights and gay rights all of those rights are in jeopardy now So we take those movements we take the actions that we saw each one of those movements enact and we unify I think that s the piece that s missing we don t recognize that in this moment we all need each other There s nobody that can sit this fight out Fouts who also encouraged Minnesotans to speak with elected leaders added that LGBTQIA S Minnesotans and older S in this matter stands for Two-Spirit a term used by Indigenous Americans who in the cases of bulk tribal groups have long occupied a distinct gender identity to fill out the Minnesota LGBTQIA S Neighborhood Demands Assessment This form is available until May and will provide Minnesota s Council on LGBTQIA S Minnesotans with figures to inform priorities going forward While those under cannot fill out the form parents can do so on behalf of their children What they d tell trans kids When inquired what she d tell trans youth who be exactly who you are We re ready to burn it down for you Tralle noted For Fouts a lot of these federal attacks against trans youth and LGBTQ youth as a whole are done with the idea of developing apart the wider LGBTQ region That he affirms has not worked before and will not work this time Our neighborhood is still here Fouts commented Our society will still continue to be here forever We will find new and different alternatives to continue to care for each other to continue to be there to show up for one another to give that advocacy where it s needed They re never gonna be able to take that away from us regardless of what services or plans they try to cut and take This is a laborious moment but our communities have faced those before and we will get through this together Rohn wrote
