Chula Vista police officers shoot, kill man in Bonita after alleged domestic disturbance

A Chula Vista police cruiser File photo courtesy OnScene TV Chula Vista police shot and killed a man around dawn Saturday after reports of a family disturbance involving a firearm in Bonita Three Chula Vista officers fired their weapons at the suspect who was allegedly armed with two handguns according to the San Diego Police Department which is inspecting the officer-involved shooting The episode began around a m when police received a radio call from a residence in the block of Country Vistas Lane When officers arrived they unveiled several family members hiding outside the house and learned that the suspect a man was at the location and had access to multiple firearms They called for additional tools including a drone and an armored truck but while they were in front of the house the suspect exited the home with his hands in his pockets They ordered him to put his hands in the air but as he took his hands from his pockets he allegedly dropped a firearm on the policies leading to the residence Officers advised him to walk away from the handgun but he sat down and put it on his lap For several minutes officers urged the man to put his hands up even as the gun remained in his lap They warned the man that he would be struck with a beanbag round if he continued to disobey their commands to drop the gun He did not comply and was struck with a beanbag shotgun round causing him to fall back The gun fell out of his lap and on to the ground San Diego police declared and the officers continued to give the man commands But he allegedly picked up the gun and pointed it in the direction of the officers as he began to sit up Three Chula Vista officers then fired their department rifles striking the man who was still seated on the initiatives He sustained multiple gunshot wounds Officers rendered aid until paramedics who were standing by arrived They transported the suspect to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead The man has been identified but San Diego police disclosed they will not release his name until additional family members have been notified Leadership recovered one handgun next to the suspect and a second from his waistband The officers who fired their weapons are law enforcement veterans One has been with the Chula Vista Police Department for approximately years while the other two have been with the agency for five and seven years All three had on body-worn cameras and activated them during the situation The entirety of the confrontation also was recorded on the department s drone equipment San Diego police homicide detectives were called in to investigate per a countywide memorandum of understanding regarding officer-involved shootings The San Diego County District Attorney s Office will review the scenario to determine if the officer bears any criminal liability The Chula Vista Police Department also will conduct an administrative inspection into the officers discharge of their firearms
